Children of Time – Two Civilizations Collide by Adrian Tchaikovsky

Technology of the Empire has been lost to time. Humankind cannot rebuild upon the soil of the past. Children of Time, a life-boat into a new world.

Technology of the Empire has been lost to time. Humankind cannot rebuild upon the soil of the past. Children of Time, a life-boat into a new world. One world, two parallel stories:

  1. Biogenetic engineering on a terraformed planet produced wildly unintended consequences, bringing high level sentience to native insectoid native life forms over thousands of generations, leading to a confrontation between them and the last surviving humans on an ark ship.
  2. The progression of the native 'spiders' from lone predators to socialized, cooperative urban groups, utilizing abstract thinking, mathematics, tools, and yes, military innovations, all in the context of their alien frame of reference, is fascinating.

Now two civilizations emerge on a collision course, both testing the boundaries of what they will do to survive. As the fate of humanity hangs in the balance, who are the true heirs of this new Earth?

Points to ponder: How does Children of Time fit into the scheme of Einstein's Spacetime?

How does the author of Child of Time make use of Science Fiction Allegory?

About the Book

Novel by Adrian Tchaikovsky: Children of TimeChildren of Time, A Tale of Colliding Civilizations

The last remnants of the human race left a dying Earth, desperate to find a new home among the stars. Following in the footsteps of their ancestors, they discover the greatest treasure of the past age—a world terraformed and prepared for human life. But all is not right in this new Eden. In the long years since the planet was abandoned, the work of its architects has borne disastrous fruit. The planet is not waiting for them, pristine and unoccupied. New masters have turned it from a refuge into mankind’s worst nightmare. Now two civilizations are on a collision course, both testing the boundaries of what they will do to survive. As the fate of humanity hangs in the balance, who are the true heirs of this new Earth?

Praise for Adrian Tchaikovsky and the "Shadows of the Apt" series:

‘Tchaikovsky clearly has a great deal of talent, and a real handle on the fantasy genre, with the ability to splice in different influences almost seamlessly’ SciFiNow

‘Reminiscent of much that’s gone before from the likes of Gemmel, Erikson, Sanderson and Cook but with its own unique and clever touch, this is another terrific outing from Mr Tchaikovsky’ Sci-Fi-London
